We felt we could have spent a little extra time at Vira Vira Hotel-maybe just till the end of the year!
However we had to catch a plane from Temuco airport, 2 hours drive away to the Atacama desert.
We leave at 8am and have a dream run into Temuco using my trusty phone navigation app. Then, there is a sign to aeroporto off the freeway but the device says to keep straight on for another 19 km. Putting our faith in technology we ignore the sign and eventually end up at a dead end road with a forbidding gate guarded by a Chilean soldier with a large gun-boy, security is tight at Chilean airports! We ask him if this is the airport and with much laughter he points in the opposite direction. We then drive around aimlessly until my eagle-eyed travelling companion spies a Hertz sign on a building. We stop and after making enquiries, discover that a new airport was built about 5 years ago and is 30km away. He points us in the right direction(from whence we came) and surprise, surprise the original sign-post takes us to the new airport in 5 minutes.
Once again we stopover in Santiago(our 4th visit) and then on to Calama where we are met by our rep from the hotel and drive 1 1/2 hours to the hotel with stop offs for views along the way.
